Description
Calvert Cliffs State Park, located on the eastern side of the Calvert Peninsula and western side of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA, was called Rickard's Cliffes on a 1612 map by explorer Captain John Smith. The area is known for the many fossils found along the shoreline, unearthed by the eroding cliffs. The fossils stem from the Middle Miocene period when the region was covered by a coastal ocean. More than 600 species of fossils from the Miocene era have been identified in the Calvert Cliffs. Designated as a wild lands area, the park encompasses nearly 1,100 acres and features 13 miles of hiking trails.
